Voice dictation in Spanish: a guide for bilingual workflows

If you've ever tried Spanish dictation on Windows' built-in Win+H or macOS dictation, you've hit the same problems most bilingual users complain about: it transcribes English fine, Spanish badly, and falls apart completely the moment you switch languages mid-sentence. The three problems with Spanish dictation in 2026

1. Auto-correct over-corrects

When you dictate "la base de datos" — "the database" — most tools route it through an English-trained language model that has never seen "base de datos" as a fluent phrase. The result: "the bass of dottos," "based on Dato's," or some equally broken attempt at hearing English in a Spanish phrase.

Real Spanish dictation has to use a Spanish-first transcription model, not English with Spanish bolted on.

2. Punctuation defaults are wrong

Spanish punctuation rules differ from English. Inverted question marks and exclamation points (¿?, ¡!) open phrases the English model never adds. Tools tuned for English never insert them, and your dictated Spanish ends up looking like Spanish written by an English speaker.

3. Code-switching breaks everything

Most bilingual conversations switch languages mid-sentence. "Sí, send me the report." "Vamos a hacer un meeting tomorrow." This is normal speech in Mexico, the US Southwest, Miami, Madrid tech offices, and the Spanish-speaking diaspora in general. Most dictation tools force you to pick one language up-front. Switch mid-sentence and you get garbled output.

The setup — 4 minutes total

1. Install Pithflow for Windows
2. Open Pithflow → Languages tab → confirm Auto-detect is ON. (This is the default. If you've changed it to a specific language, set it back to Auto.)
3. Style tab → set tone to Casual or Professional — these have Spanish-aware cleanup. The Slack tone is good for chat. The Email tone formats correspondence with appropriate openings ("Hola," / "Estimado/a," depending on register).

Mixed-language edge cases

What if I want to force a specific language?

Sometimes auto-detection guesses wrong on very short clips ("Sí." or "OK") because there isn't enough audio to be confident. Lock the Languages tab to Spanish explicitly for those sessions — Pithflow will treat every transcript as Spanish regardless of acoustic cues. Switch back to Auto when you're done.

What about Spanish numbers / currency?

Saying "tres mil quinientos pesos" produces "3,500 pesos" — the transcription handles spoken numbers and the cleanup formats them. Same for dates ("quince de junio" → "15 de junio") and times ("las cuatro y media" → "4:30").

What about Catalan / Galician / Basque?

Pithflow supports Catalan natively. Galician and Basque are smaller-market and currently handled via the multilingual fallback — usable but less polished than Spanish or Catalan. Quality will improve as the model is retrained.
